Beate Linne,
born in Germany in 1967, she is one of the distinctive voices of contemporary performance art. Her artistic path is characterized by a versatility that is reflected both in her interdisciplinary education and in the wide range of her artistic work. She studied architecture, art education, German language and literature, and pedagogy, creating a foundation that brings together analytical thinking, aesthetic awareness, and social reflection. Her artistic practice has been shaped and refined through the influence of artists such as Boris Nieslony, Monika & Rüdi Schill, Alastair MacLennan and Ray Langenbach.
Since the beginning of her international artistic career in 2007, Linne has focused primarily on performance art, complemented by video works and installation-based formats. Her works are not mere presentations but process-oriented, often physically intense explorations of the human condition. At the center of her practice is her own body, serving simultaneously as medium and material: it becomes a carrier of experience, an instrument of insight, and a site for confronting social norms and individual boundaries. Her performances challenge established patterns of perception and open up alternative spaces for thought and experience, creating intense situations charged with existential significance. Her work exemplifies a form of performance art distinguished by intellectual depth, physical presence, and a continuous search for new modes of expression. Through the combination of personal experience, international exchange, and artistic integrity, she has developed a practice that is both reflective and deeply affecting.
Internationally, Beate Linne has presented her work at renowned institutions, galleries, and festivals. Her works have been shown at, among others, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Today Art Museum in Beijing, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Oaxaca, Grace Exhibition Space and Longwood Art Gallery in New York City, the Magyar Műhely Galéria in Budapest, You and Me Space in Xiaozhou, Guangzhou, and the Petach Tikva Museum of Art in Israel. This international presence highlights the reach and relevance of her artistic practice. Her artistic language is characterized by dense, poetically charged imagery that oscillates between intimacy and public exposure, between silence and expressive action.
A defining aspect of her work is collaboration with other artists and collectives. She works with artist Bálint Sombathy, was part of the duo Linne & Vaara, and has performed as a guest with the internationally acclaimed ensemble Black Market International.
In addition to her own artistic practice, Linne is active as an organizer and advocate for performance art. She is the founder and director of the art and cultural association NO W HERE e.V. and has co-curated international performance art festivals. In this role, she contributes to the networking of the international performance art community and creates platforms for artistic dialogue and exchange.
